Business Analyst, Risk - Job Role & Responsibilities

The Risk Management IT group provides support to global Risk Management in the areas of technology and information processing for measuring, quantifying, analyzing, controlling, and reporting Risk exposures for traded securities products.

The role is for a Senior Technology Business Analyst within Global Risk Management Technology group. The candidate will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting complex Market Risk and Credit Risk related business problems, translating them into technical solutions, and playing a key role in the development, testing and implementation of the solution. This will involve working closely with stakeholders, developers, and project managers to ensure that the business requirements are understood and incorporated into the technical design and development. This will also include acting as both the BA and Project Manager for smaller implementations that do not require a separate full time PM.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Elicit, develop, and define business requirements for systems changes related to Risk Management analytics and processes
  • Analyze and interpret complex business requirements and translate them into a technical solution approach and implementation roadmap
  • Create technical specifications which can be used by developers to build and test the solution/application
  • Document current and future state business processes and flows
  • Identify and assess risks and limitations associated with technical solutions and recommend strategies for mitigation
  • Participate in all phases of IT project life-cycle including analysis, specification, design, and testing, implementation, and post implementation support
  • Provide analytical support of enterprise-wide Risk Management systems, including diagnosing and troubleshooting of analytics issues, as well as ongoing monitoring and management of Risk system calculations and processes.
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis in various aspects of analytical risk measurement such as exposures, stress tests, VaR, and risk sensitivities
  • Function as liaison to coordinate work efforts with teams across the firm to accomplish firmwide initiatives, projects, and delivery of IT solutions (Risk Management, Front and Middle Offices in Equities and Fixed Income divisions, Corporate IT teams such as Treasury and Collateral, and IT Infrastructure teams)
  • Conduct enterprise database analysis, management, and integration of front-to-back office enterprise data management using SQL.
  • Perform software development, support, and maintenance for Jefferies Financial Risk Management systems, applications, and components.
Business Analyst, Risk - Job requirements

Essential Experience/ Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • 8+ years of relevant experience as a business analyst in capital markets related large scale implementations
  • Strong understanding of technical concepts and tools relevant to programming, databases, data structures, and SDLC (both Waterfall and Agile)
  • Strong understanding of capital markets concepts, products, and terms
  • Experience in the financial services industry with exposure to market risk or counterparty credit risk applications
  • Knowledge of market risk and credit risk domain analytics such as VaR, PnL vectors, stress testing scenarios, sensitivities, credit exposures, etc.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Strong project management and team collaboration skills
  • Practical experience with Excel, SQL, and BI Tools for data analysis
  • Experience using Jira for full development cycle (requirement to deployment).
  • Experience and knowledge of SDLC methodologies and development processes such as requirement gathering, analysis and definition, prototyping, proof of concept, designing and implementation
  • Familiarity with programming disciples such as Python and Visual Basic

  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial in approach
  • Ability to escalate / follow-up proactively
  • Good time management skills

Experience Required:

  • 5+ yrs experience in an analytical systems role in a broker-dealer or financial services company, preferably in the area of Financial Risk Management and/or Risk Management Technology
  • Experience with large quantitative analytics projects in the Financial Sector
  • Proven Analytic and problem solving abilities.
  • Degrees in Computer Science and Financial Engineering, or related fields
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Experience with enterprise database analysis, and proficiency of one or more data analysis tools such as Aqua Data, Oracle SQL Developer, Quest, etc
  • Solid understanding of the software development life-cycle process (SDLC).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Experience with enterprise database analysis, and proficiency of one or more data analysis tools such as MS Access, Aqua Data, Quest, etc
  • Enthusiastic, motivated team player, cooperative and collaborative attitude and work ethic.
  • Self-starter, ability to work with limited supervision, ability to multitask
