Business Analyst - Job Role & Responsibilities

The Business Analyst collaborates with University constituents on various prospective projects and ideas to identify and document objectives and goals, as well as functional, technical, and project requirements. They collaborate with various departments and subject matter experts to identify options for achieving their objectives and provide recommendations and guidance on possible solutions.

Essential Functions

  • Provides analysis, guidance, design and recommendations of options and solutions for various project requests
  • Collaborates with various departments of the University to Identify and document project goals, objectives, desired outcomes, scope, technical and functional requirements
  • Identifies the appropriate resources/team from various departments (Requesting and impacted departments, subject matter experts, Vendors, Project Managers, IT technical resources…) needed to fulfill the requirements gathering
  • Provides support to the governance and project team for understanding and clarification of project specifications
  • Communicates progress and status of the various requirements gathering to management and escalate unsettled conflicts, obstacles and risks affecting the progress of the work

  • Serves as consultant to management and business groups to assess needs, develop and implement solutions
  • Contributes to the development of vision and direction for technical initiatives and plans, forecasting needs and maintaining currency with trends in own area of responsibility or specialization
  • Challenges and enhances analytical approaches or tools
  • Applies fact-based analysis to achieve business strategy
  • Reviews and validates analysis, and develops recommendations in context of functional area or full project
  • Facilitates constructive communication across the team
  • Communicates engagement status, progress, and impact to management
  • Assesses implication of changes in scope
  • Identifies changes in scope of work and communicates appropriately
  • Leads scope development
  • Facilitates the team’s understanding and evaluation of the relationships between project goals and career development
  • Reviews deliverables to ensure that they meet expectations and are consistent with IT standards
  • Manages day to day relationships with vendors and consultants
  • Demonstrates knowledge of client's business model and decision-making framework and identifies areas of improvement
  • Provides recommendations to client and staff for technical designs and analyses
  • Demonstrates analytical, diagnostic, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills, gather requirements and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, (executives, managers, subject matter experts)
  • Good organizational and time management skills

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an IT or related field or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understands teaching environment, curriculum development and processes
  • Understands of the external environment and how it affects academia in general and Fordham in particular, including technical, legal, financial and social influences
  • Strong understanding of technical, business and cultural environment of higher education in general and Fordham in particular
  • Plans and designs complex systems architectures, specifications and applications
  • Strong analytical/problem solving and technical skills
  • Develops and delivers presentations of technical matters in a clear and understandable manner
  • Independent management of own work flow and work outcomes
  • Customer service oriented
  • Interacts and collaborates with vendors
  • 2-4 years’ work experience in a related field
